Now even the Supreme Court (SC) has stated that, "if the three acts (Farm Laws) have been stayed, then why are the farmers protesting?". The two judges of SC hearing the case filed by the farmers association related to the validity of farm laws noted, “There is nothing to be implemented now. What are the farmers' protesting about? No one other than the court can decide the validity of the farm laws."

Further, the Judges while hearing their plea to allow holding Satyagrah at Jantar Mantar further stated, "When farmers are in court challenging the laws, why protest?" Thereafter, they stated, what a law abiding citizen of this country wanted to hear, they said, “The court will also examine whether the right to protest is an absolute right.”

As a common man it leaves us wondering ; Where are we as a society heading to? Where all this is leading us to?

The farmers unashamedly resorted to Hooliganism blocking roads and causing discomfort to people using roads , drove tractors rashly through the roads in Delhi, vandalized Red fort, resorted to stone pelting and are now talking about Satyagrah at Jantar mantar?

Do they even understand, what Satyagrah means, particularly, when some farmers at Lakhimpur were seen beating the driver of the Car mercilessly.

SATYAGRAH was not a weapon of class struggle, or of any other kind of weapon or tool to coerce or snatch something. Satyagraha was instead an instrument of unity. It was a way to remove injustice and restore social harmony, to the benefit of both sides.

Why do the farmers have no faith on Judiciary?

Gandhiji, once remarked ; In a civilized society the disputes can only be resolved by Non Violent means and through Courts.

When the Indian farmers are protesting against the farm laws (which the Govt thinks in its wisdom that they are for their benefit) and the others opposing  National Asset Monetisation scheme, it reminds us of late 80s and early 90s when India had launched its economic reforms. Rather the whole era right from the time when Mr Rajeev Gandhi tried revolutionizing the telecom sector and opening up of the economy, India witnessed almost similar kind of voices from opposition ; India is being sold to capitalists, India’s integrity will be endangered, Govt is once again inviting East India Company ,The Govt is anti poor and so on.

The economic reforms although heralded a new era in India’s history but we continue to hear similar kind of noises, whenever the reforms are brought in, the only difference is – Earlier BJP was opposing and now it is trying to bring reforms.

In 90s the Bharatiya Janata Party under the leadership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee was extremely critical of the Govt’s approach to foreign investment and as usual it argued that Foreign Direct Investment would be detrimental to India’s interests. Even Yashwant Sinha, criticised the industrial policy reforms. They blamed the Govt for selling India. The Left parties position has not changed, they were then also opposed to the liberalization process that Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao and Dr. Singh had embarked upon.

Thus the economic reforms that kick-started in 1991 despite the massive opposition both by the BJP and Leftists brought about expansion of the services sector that was helped largely by a liberalised investment and trade regime. The reforms also reduced poverty significantly as has been indicated by various Human development Indices over the years.

The share of services in GDP has increased 20 percentage points since 1991, reflecting a decisive change in the nature of India's economic output. The chart on top is an indicator as to how the Reforms changed the course of Indian economy.

It would therefore not be wrong to state that - What we are today in 2021 is purely because of the conviction and commitment of Dr Singh and Narsimhan Rao towards Reforms.

Right from the time when Mr Rajeev Gandhi tried revolutionizing the telecom sector and opening up of the economy, India heard almost similar kind of voices from opposition; India is being sold to capitalists, India’s integrity will be endangered, Govt is once again inviting East India Company ,The Govt is anti poor and so on.

In 90s when Narsimharao and his Finance Minister Dr MM Singh started the economic reforms process, the opposition led by Vajpayee once again made the same charges.

The only difference now is earlier BJP was accusing the Govt and now BJP is being accused, rest is same, and the accusations are same.

In last two decades more than a lac farmers have committed suicide, pick up any journal and enquire what did the experts and farmers want, one would notice that almost every expert had criticized the Mandi act and wanted to do away with them and every expert talked of freeing the shackles of marginal and poor farmers.

The farmers themselves, who are protesting now demanded that they be unshackled and allowed to sell anywhere.

So any observer would feel why these farmers are protesting when the three laws are an attempt to unshackle and free them from the clutches of middlemen and empower them.

Sticking to just one demand of repealing the laws, brings us to a point that ;

Does that mean everything was hunky dory before the laws came in? or Are these farm laws so bad that they will not be freed?

In that case, Tikait and his associates who are supporting the Bharat Bandh, need to answer to the countrymen ;

Why were the farmers committing suicide, all these years?

Why are Indian farmers suffering from poverty and what needs to be done to enhance the income of poor and marginal farmers?

All these farmer associations going on strike on 27th need to answer these two basic questions.

As a citizen of the country, who wants every Indian, including the farmers to grow and prosper, we may accept that the Govt laws are awful and they may not help the farmers but then for God’s sake, Mr Tikait please come out with your Plan ;

What should be done to Help the farmers? Do these people indulging in Hooliganism for last many months have a plan at all ?

It appears as of now ; THEY HAVE NO PLAN to help the farmers cause except indulging in Hooliganism.

The previous article titled ;Is Modi a Dumb Politician dated 04 Mar21 https://www.bharatamrising.com/latest-in-politics-3 related to the Farm laws is still applicable as it was then six months back.

Even his worst detrators can not say that Mr Modi is a dumb politician.

So, the focus of this article will be only on why the protests are not fading away and What the Govt needs to do.

However, so much has been written in favour of the reforms that it is now pointless to discuss the merit of three laws which the farmers want to be rolled back.

Background

In last two decades more than a lac farmers have committed suicide, pick up any journal and enquire what did the experts and farmers say then one would notice that almost every expert had criticized the Mandi act and wanted to do away with them and every expert talked of freeing the shackles of marginal and poor farmers.

The farmers themselves, who are protesting now demanded that they be unshackled and allowed to sell anywhere.

Were the previous Govts not concerned? Were Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi and Capt Amrinder Singh indifferent to the farmers’ miseries ? If they could think of MNREGA and Food security Bill, Free Electricity then I think they were not indifferent in its real sense. A politician is not an idiot, he usually does things which can enhance their electoral prospects.

So why did they not think of repealing the Mandi acts ? Obviously they knew that there will be political ramifications of any abolishing Mandis and had NO COURAGE to disturb the apple cart.

Therefore, the point arises that if the protest by farmers refuses to fade away then Is Mr Modi and his team purposely and consciously digging their graves, after all a huge huge percentage of India’s population is dependant on agriculture.

why should they be doing this?

Those who accuse that this decision was taken to help big corporate houses, is once again a stupid argument because after all it is the farmers who are finally going to either vote Mr Modi in or out of power.

Lets not undermine the fact that we still have almost more than 60% of our population dependent on agriculture. How can Mr Modi be so stupid to antagonize the farmers.

Hence the PM has postponed the implementation of laws.

So, why are the farmers still agitating?

It surely can not be ruled out that many protesters have political motive but there may be other reasons also which might have been bothering the farmers. Lets not dismiss the problems right at the outset.
