Our journey as a Modern Nation State started in 1947 with the historic speech by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, we then had hardly 10% literates, barely any industry, few educational institutions that could hardly meet the needs of the new Nation, negligible transport system and infrastructure, armed forces were in disarray ; divided due to partition, lacking equipment... if there were guns - then the dial sights were taken away by Pakistanis, making the guns ineffective, if there were files - maps were taken way by Pakistanis, if there were battalions, half the men and officers had gone away to Pakistan and so on.
The only thing that the then PM inherited from the British was ; Poverty, deprivation, unemployment, millions of refugees and empty coffers. Thus, today, when we look back and compare,we have made tremendous progress on almost all fronts. However, when we look at our counterparts, for instance : other South Eastern Asian nations and China, who faced similar challenges, we find that our progress has been slow and tardy. Although, one may argue that they did not follow the democratic path to manage the country.
Notwithstanding the multi - decade delay, we are slowly and steadily moving towards achieving our global position amongst our peers, which we truly deserve.
Vision and Objectives.
Undeniably, changes are taking place and therefore this is the moment when we need to carry out reforms and reorganize, which can only come when we find answers to inter - related matters of our identity, of our past, of self esteem, of our core values and of security.
This website shall be a platform where an earnest effort to find answers and solutions to such questions and challenges so that, hopefully we as a Nation and as a Society forge a better future ahead :
- What are our National objectives?
- What are our core values?
- Where are we heading to?
- Will this current arrangement and structure be able to meet our objectives and take us on the right path?
- How can we achieve a place amongst the comity of nations that we truly deserve and how to prevent inimical powers from harming us?
- What sort of society do we wish to be ?
- Are we now moving in the right direction towards making India a better place?
- Are we just busy correcting the perceived historical wrongs.
- Are we working out appropriate solutions for the safety and security of citizens?
- Are we still the same Indians as Alberuni described in 11th century stolid & hard headed.
- Are we gearing ourselves to face the economic, political and social challenges of the future?
- What are our social challenges and what are we doing about those.
- How can we make progress if the society is not at peace with itself?
- What needs to be done to achieve Peace?
Our Team .
Inorder to seek the answers to these aforementioned questions and challenges that face the Nation and the Society we have a dedicated team of individuals who have the passion to enquire and write .

Enquiry.
The answers to these questions are not easy to come.
As we dwelve into our past, the first question that comes to mind is :
- Did we as a nation come into existence in 1947?
- Did the British give us a united India on a silver platter?
This enquiry into our past throws up some interesting lessons :
A. Continuity. How we have been able to sustain this Continuity for almost 5000 years ?. The Sumerians came and disappeared, the Egyptian civilization disappeared, the Mayan civilization vanished But astonishingly our civilization has continued despite facing numerous invasions and even if our ancestors born 2000 years ago come back to life they will find that we worship the same gods as they worshipped in their times and the basics of our culture have remained the same. So, culturally there seems to be no doubt that there has been continuity. https://www.bharatamrising.com/our-unity-is-not-factitious-2
But Nation State is a recent phenomena that came into existence Post Treaty of Westphalia in 1648.
B. Indicators of Decay.
Nehruji while analysing the reasons for our political decline and cultural stagnation writes in Discovery of India in 1933 that : A small country might easily be overwhelmed by superior power, but a huge, well developed and highly civilised country like India can not succumb to external attack unless there is some internal decay which was clearly evident in India.
He further emphasises that Shankracharya was the last greatest philospher (800AD) and Bhaskara II (12the century) was the last great Mathematician that this land produced. The Vedic Civilisation had lost its vigour and the political decline and cultural stagnation was quite visible by 8th century. The process although was a slow one and lasted several centuries. The following aspects are an indicator of the slow decay that had set in ;
- How could we lose again and again to raiders who came with few camels?
- How could we get surprised by the artillery guns that Babur brought, why could n’t we, a developed civilisation make those?
- How could British defeat one king after another using superior infantry and cavalry integrated with artillery.
- Why couldn’t our kings integrate the artillery better with Infantry and cavalry.
C. What Others Think About Us ?
It is therefore to get to the root of our decay and achievements, its important that we look at ourselves from others eyes as to how others have perceived us as this would help us in SWOT analysis.
In our history of almost 5000 years we have witnessed travelers and scholars like, Megasthenese ,Ibn Batuta, Fahien, Hieun Tsang, Alberuni, Max Muller and many other Indians as well who have shared their experiences about Indian civilization
Obviously, we lost again and again to invaders because of the deep rooted decay that took place because of our inward looking approach, described by Alberuni.
Alberuni, a noted historian who came to India with Mahmud Ghazni describes the attitude of the then Indians of 11th century. He says “They(Indians) are haughty, foolishly vain, self contained and stolid, and they believe that there is no country like theirs, no king like theirs and no science like theirs.”
Aren’t we, the natives of this land still the same as our ancestors were in 11th century?
The Greeks, John Murray writes in his Book, The History of India, have described Indians as tall and active. Their bravery was always spoken of as characteristic their superiority in war to other Asiatics is repeatedly asserted and appears in more ways than one. They are said to be sober, moderate, peaceable, good soldiers, good farmers, remarkable for simplicity and integrity so reasonable as never to have recourse to a law suit and so honest as neither to require locks to their doors nor writings to bind their agreements. Above all no Indian was ever known to tell an untruth”.
The Greek diplomat, traveler and historian Megasthenes, who visited Bharat during the Mauryan reign (c. 320 - 180 BCE) remarked : Patliputra was among the first cities in the world to have a highly efficient form of local self government.
However, what about the contemporary Indian society. Swapan Das Gupta in his forthright article in India Today, Aug’98 said “ Indians lack discipline and Civic sense”. And VS Naipaul writes : Indians defecate everywhere.
How could we whose ancestors were so honest and brave and made world’s best cities at Dholavira, Harappa, Rakhigarhi became unruly, corrupt, delinquent and irresponsible citizens.
This should be a matter of Research by Social and Political Pundits. Francis Fukuyama in his Book ; Political Order And Political Decay while describing this typical behaviour as to Why people look at state with suspicion, cheat and become Individualistic stated that - it can be attributed to Foreign Rule.
Shri C Rajgopalachari mentioned in his prison diary in 1922 “Elections and their corruption, injustice and the power and tyranny of wealth and inefficiency of administration will make hell of life as soon as freedom is given to us. Men will look regretfully back to the old regime of comparative justice and efficient, peaceful more or less honest administration. The only thing gained from independence will be that as a race we will be saved from dishonor and subordination”.
Stephen Cohen in his book - Emerging Power : India, says, “No other country has ever engaged in as lengthy wide ranging and intensive discussions as India did before it crossed various nuclear thresholds". This was when its neighbor with whom it had fought a war had become nuclear in 1967. Probably, under the influence of the moral precepts the Indian establishment does not possess the expertise to deal with such concepts as limited nuclear war or deterrence.
Max Muller a renowned German philosopher while delivering a lecture in the University of Cambridge in 1882 said : If I were asked under what sky the human mind has most fully developed some of its choicest gifts, has most deeply pondered over the greatest problems of life and has found solutions of some of them which well deserve the attention even of those who have studied Plato and Kant – I should point towards India. And if I were to ask myself from what literature we here in Europe, we who have been nurtured almost exclusively on the thoughts of Greeks and Romans and of Semitic race, the Jewish, may draw the corrective which is most wanted in order to make our inner life more perfect, more comprehensive more universal infact more truly human not for this life but eternal life again I should point to India.
Stephen Cohen again his Book - The Emerging India writes that : India can only become an unwieldy Elephant and not an effective and efficient Lion.
These experiences shared by travelers at different moments of history give us a fair amount of Idea about our strengths and weaknesses/areas of improvement. We may not become a Lion but surely can become a Light House that can guide mankind towards the right direction, at the same time those ideas and experiences can tell us ,as to why we have not made as much progress as other Asian nations have.
Ratan Tata once said : " Innovation, and ideas to solve, have always been intrinsic to India. We just don’t have the capacity or intent to fund it from within the country. Most innovators had to look to the West or East for investment or acknowledgement. I fondly remember Dr. Amar Bose, who was renowned for the Bose brand of audio equipment that became a world phenomenon. He used his knowledge and tech expertise to create many solutions for different sectors. For twenty years, he worked hard to create one of the best suspension systems for cars. I had the privilege to sit in one of the prototype cars he created using this suspension technology and I was surprised. When most cars find it hard to navigate through Indian road conditions, here was a car invented by Dr. Bose that sailed through with utmost comfort to the passenger. This invention unfortunately never saw the light of day. But many such Amar Boses exist in India".
We therefore need to find Amar Boses, support them and build them to grow into businesses/ entrepreneurs/scientists/technocrats/leaders/managers of the future. That’s how India will unlock its latent potential.
What should we be doing ?
All this necessitates that we keep carrying out SWOT analysis, Keep evaluating ourselves and keep asking questions. Many more such questions related to India and World as they impact us will be discussed here on this Platform : BACK TO HOME PAGE
