Fd Marshal Sam Manekshaw in his lectures on leadership qualities always spoke about Moral Courage as the first attribute to be a Great Leader.. And gave his personal example as to how He stood firm against Mrs Gandhi and gave her the correct professional advise. He said ;
When Mrs Gandhi during a meeting asked him to attack East Pakistan in the month of Jun71, he refused. The meeting was immediately called off and she also left the room. The three ministers, presnt in the meeting ; Foreign Minister, Home Minister and the Def Minister got up sheepishly and started walking towards the Exit door. Babu Jagjeevn Ram , the then def minister, said ; General sahib aapney aisey kaisey keh diya. Before he could reply, he heard Mrs Gandhi calling him ; Sam Pl come . Realising that Mrs Gandhi must be annoyed with his disagreement He had already planned his next move, He said ; Maam your father in 1962 had a weak kneed General who could not give the correct advise to your illustrious father, and as a result the nation was humiliated. If you so insist, I am willing to resign on the grounds of poor health and you can choose another General who would lead the Indian army to war in June.
Mrs Gandhi replied ; No, No Sam sit down, and tell me why cann’t we go in for war in Jun.
Then Sam explained the reasons and thereafter the decision was taken to go in for war in Nov/ Dec.
Hats off to Sam for having the moral courage to speak his mind and hats off to Mrs Gandhi as a leader to call back Sam and listen to him and revert the decision.
Perhaps this is what has happened today.
May be some Officer in Mr Modi’s team stood firm and spoke his mind. In this regard read my article Can Mr Modi Instill Confidence in farmers. https://www.bharatamrising.com/latest-in-politics-4/can-mr-modi-instill-confidence-amongst-farmers
There was nothing wrong in farm laws but those reforms were brought in a hurry when the basic foundations have still not been laid, for instance the e mandis are still not operational in states.
The Govt was trying to erect walls of a building whose Foundations have still not been built.
So we must applaud that officer who spoke his mind and also Mr Modi for finally listening to this officers’ voice and having the courage to revert his decision.
Some may still scoff at this calling it an electoral compulsion, but that he did it facing the nation, by itself is truly remarkable.
KUCH TO LOG KAHINGEY.
Lastly, This is also a lesson for this category of ; Blind Followers who without studying and acquiring any knowledge of the subject start extending support to the Govt.
