In an increasingly globalised world, it has become imperative for the policy makers, businessmen, entrepreneurs, tourists etc to assess the health of a nation on various parameters; Health care, law and order, business environment, human rights, freedom of expression etc before investing or setting up businesses or while devising foreign policy objectives or even while visiting a country.

It is something like the Bankers referring to our CIBIL score to decide how much loan can be granted and whether we are capable enough to repay the loan.

Similarly, the various indexes that world bodies / agencies notify from time to time are like the CIBIL score of a nation or a society. These Indexes serve the same purpose as our CIBIL Score serves.

The HDI, Poverty Index, Corruption Index, Democracy index, Ease to do business index, Per capita income, etc etc are the indicators that tell us and others about the Health of a Nation and the Society. All the Indices that are mentioned above are a measure of various parameters of Governance and have nothing to do with our perception about a society or a Nation.

For instance; take HDI, HUMAN DEVELOPMENT INDEX. This Index is a summary measure for assessing long-term progress in three basic dimensions of human development - a long and healthy life, access to knowledge and a decent standard of living.

The Human Development Index (HDI), is released by World bank every year, in which India is languishing year after year around 130s out of 180 Nations, but this year sadly it has slid down one more rank ; it stands at 132 now.

The parameters that are used to calculate the Index points are - per capita income, mortality rates, percentage of skilled population, availability of health care facilities, education facilities, how many leave schools at the primary level and so on.

The countries that occupy the Top positions in this Index are; Norway, Ireland, Switzerland, Hongkong, Germany, Sweden, Australia, Denmark, USA, UK, Japan, Netherlands, whereas India which for many years now languishing at 130s finds itself at this position surrounded by countries like - Bangladesh, Pakistan, Bhutan and few African countries.

It’s obvious, that the Nations occupying the top positions on the table are developed nations. One who has been to Germany, Japan can easily make out the difference between India and Germany/Japan/ Sweden.

Another one is Poverty Index. This index is used by planners to assess which countries need the financial aid and in which sector they need to focus on. Once again, we find that the Nations who were at the top of HDI table are having low poverty index and are richer nations, whereas those at the bottom of HDI are at the higher end of this poverty Index as well.  So, it’s not surprising to find India being ranked along with the same friends at the bottom of the list. The parameters that are used to calculate the Index are ;

Health Care; Child mortality rates, Nutrition, Standard of living; Availability of cooking fuel, Sanitation, Housing assets and so on.

It’s not difficult to ascertain as to why we are ranked low - In India approx 32 kids out of 1000 die when they are not even 5 years old, whereas, in France mere 4.4 children out of 1000 die and in China its 7.3  and this happens because our mothers and children do not get sufficient nutrition and do not have access to better medical facilities.

So, it should surprise none, despite the Indian Govt as usual blaming the agencies for maligning India – It is ranked 104 on the Global Hunger Index Afterall , it is because of the lack of proper Nutrition that our children are dying in such numbers.

We occupy similar positions on almost every possible Index.

Conclusion.

The above indicates that if we improve on Human Development Index we surely improve on other indices as well or If we improve on per capita income this will also surely be reflected in many other Indices.

For example ; India’s per capita income is one of the lowest despite being one of the largest economies. This automatically tells us that We must be lower down in ranking on Poverty Index and Human Development Index, Our Health Care system must be awful and so on. Its not Rocket Science.

So, How many Indices will we keep REJECTING, in the guise of that the whole world is ganging up against us? And Why should we be thinking in this manner? Only paranoid think this way.

What difference will it make to US or UK or France or Germany or Australian Presidents/ PMs whether India is ranked 130 on HDI or even 150 or its sliding down the democracy index till the time they are getting a market to sell their products.

It is for the common man to understand that if the Nation is being consistently sliding down these indexes, then ultimately it is they who are going to suffer and its their own leaders who are fooling them and not the world.

It is understandable that a ruling party may come out with different reasons to justify their ineffectiveness but why should the COMMON MAN believe this bullshit given by a political party.

The history tells us that the world leaders have always hobnobbed and shook hands with cruel tyrant rulers for their own Nations’ interest; Saddam Hussein, Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Mao, Kim Jong and many more. One can have a look at the pics below. And why not, it is none of their concern as to what an autocrat does to his people/ country, till their own interests are being met.

Therefore, it’s not surprising that these tyrants/ autocrats were able to rule their respective countries using their propaganda machine to spread;

One, That they will bring back the glory of past. Mussolini promised to bring back the glory of Roman empire, Hitler assured the Aryan supremacy, Putin has promised to regain the lost glory of USSR , Erdogan has promised to bring back the old glory of Ottoman empire which ruled more than half the Europe.

Two. That the world is ganging up against them to stop their march ahead to glory; present day Russia, and Turkey are doing the same and earlier Mussolini and Hitler resorted to same strategy.

So, the point is How long we as a society keep behaving like dumbs and fall for PROPAGANDA ; Akhand Bharat, becoming Vishw Guru.

We can not even file an FIR without hassles, Our Police and Judiciary is corrupt to the core, Our hospitals are rotten and Govt run schools are in mess and We are behaving as if everything is hunky dory.

I would have still believed these assurances/promises had there been improvement in our Police, in our hospitals, in our Courts, in our schools. Nothing of this sort has happened in last 8 years. Our courts, our Police, our courts, our hospitals continue to function in the same manner as they did 8 years ago.

The history tells us that these Leaders who played with such emotions of the masses led their countries to disaster like Putin and Erdogan who have brought their countries close to disaster, medievalism and conservatism.

Many years back while attending a workshop to become a corporate trainer we were told that a trainer must think from audiences’ perspective because those attending the workshop have the tendency to look for; What is in it for me? If they find nothing useful in the presentation/ topic they tend to switch off.

We all, as part of the society, also largely behave in this manner. Every issue that the society faces, the people tend to ask the same question - what is in it for me? and, when we find that the issue does not concern us we promptly respond ; “ Mere ko kya lena dena”, “ It’s not my problem” and as a result many of us often turn a blind eye.

It would not be wrong to state here that - We all therefore, suffer from this “It’s not my problem syndrome”.

The same is perhaps applicable to the problem faced by women wrestlers.

Those girls are complaining for last four months and it made no difference to us all, because none of them are perhaps our daughters and sisters, and hence ; Its not my Problem. But surely, they are someone’s daughters and their parents must be concerned.

If one looks at it dispassionately, surely It does not take four months to complete an enquiry, provided it was ordered.

The Wrestling Federation Chief, a BJP man and a six-time MP, has political clout and so the whole lot of politicians, including Mr Amit Shah, whom the girls met three months ago, have been dragging their feet. Otherwise by now the enquiry would have been finished and justice would have been done. Therefore, its common sense and even a layman would understand as to why he could get away with charges of sexual harassment since 2012 or so.

Unfortunately, the pathological Modi supporters are unable to see what kind of monsters we have created and are in the process of creating.

This “It’s not my problem” syndrome will one day burn the whole edifice created by our forefathers.

For instance; Today we are not displaying any concern on the growing hooliganism of BAJRANGDAL activists and dozens of other Right wing senas that have come up in recent years. Some of us are even justifying their presence little realising that we are playing with Fire and that Fire has the potential to reach our homes and families.

Today, this may sound to be an alarmist’s call to many but these news reports are surely an indicator of what lies ahead;

One. UNI Report. Sehore, MP, July 8 (UNI) Bajrang Dal activists today created a ruckus at Rehati police station and beat up a head constable in this district, police sources said.

Two. The police probe carried out after the murder revealed that Sunil, a Bajrangdal activist had been stalking and pestering Sameer’s sister for more than three months, Shivamogga Superintendent of Police Mithun Kumar said. Twelve. A Police inspector and three constables were suspended in Manguluru on Monday, 25 April, pending a probe for allegedly assaulting Bajrang Dal activist .The Bajrang Dal activists were detained by the police for harassing a coconut vendor who had complained against them in Moodbidri.

Conclusion.

These are just some of the reports that have been quoted here to drive home a point that sooner or later, if we do not take right measures now, we may reach a stage when this fire reaches our homes.

Even now if some suffer from this It’s not my problem syndrome then Consider these instances;

Your brother is hit by an SUV driven by a …….. activist and the Police is reluctant to file a case.

Your daughter or sister is harassed by a …….. activist and you will not be able to file a case against him.

Your plot is illegally occupied by one of their activists, and you will not be able to take a legal recourse.

Your son is studying in a college and gets into a tiff with these activists, they come and thrash him, the Police will not file a case.

You are going to a market with your family and a reckless driver comes and hits your car, and then he drags you out and thrashes you in front of family, when you try to file a case against him in the police station, the Police does not file a case because he is an ACTIVIST.

These are not imaginary incidents; this has already started happening as brought out above.

People having degrees from top universities, at times, have a habit of Flaunting and boasting about their Degrees at every opportunity.

Besides the above, they also look down upon others and think that they are experts on everything under the sky, little realisng that Gulzar, Amitabh, Javed Akhtar, Kumar Vishwas, Shabana Azmi, Charles Correa, Captain B. H. Liddell Hart, Sun Tzu,  etc also were highly intelligent people who have made a mark in their respective fields.

What has IIT Degree got to do with Administration. At IIT , one learns Engineering and not Administration, History , Psychology, Geology, Law etc. Secondly, Degree does not make anyone a better and a Skilled human being.

Kejriwal's attack on Mr Modi's Degree smacked of this typical arrogance and as a result, he missed the real issue.

Hence, Judiciary rightfully snubbed him.

However, in my opinion the issue is not the PM's Degree, but whether that Degree is genuine or fake.

A Govt official can be sacked for submitting fake educational certificates and in armed forces he can be court martialed.
Private Companies hire Intelligence agencies to check the veracity of certificates submitted by an employee.

Whether the PM is a Graduate or even 12th pass should not be a cause of concern, the concern should be WHETHER the documents submitted by him are Genuine or Not.

If those Degrees are fake then it speaks volumes about the INTEGRITY of a man.

I am sure some day all this shall come out, the more they stuff their secrets in a cupboard, higher are the chances that some day this cupboard will burst open and its contents will tumble out.
How would the generations to come would look at Mr Modi then ?

Notwithstanding the above, this whole episode is also is a reflection of our Obsession with Degrees.
The Day we as a society give up our obsession for Degrees and focus on SKILLS we would be able to redesign our system in such a manner where SKILLS would matter and not the Degrees.
It is primarily this reason why we can not produce men like Bill Gates, Ford, Mark Zuckerberg, Michelangelo, Steve Jobs.
If we can have one of the finest artists world has known without acquiring Degrees then we can produce Technocrats also without the big  Degrees.

An Indian Army soldier, was allegedly killed by a politician in Tamil Nadu's Krishnagiri district. His brother who is also a soldier reportedly said ; He wants justice and he will not return to the force until those who killed my brother are punished. We didn't do anything wrong. He (the political leader) said that 'you might be working in the Indian Army but can't do anything to me'.

This is not a political issue but is a social and an administrative issue and therefore should not be politicised.

This is not something that has not happened before; Subedar Pan Singh became a dacoit because he was illtreated by the local administration, father of a serving soldier was lynched to death a few years back, a soldier was beaten in Delhi a few years ago in full day light.

There was a time when a company commander or a Commanding Officer of the unit could write a letter to the concerned SP or a Collector and a soldiers’ domestic problem could be resolved but over a period of time the administrative machinery in most parts of India has become defunct and it only works when kick started by a politician. It would not be surprising to notice that even a few kilometres from PM’s and Chief Minister’s house, people have little regard for law.

A soldier and his family is now at the mercy of society which has become so politically vitiated that there is no empathy left. A society where concern for dead is reflected based on caste and religion, what better can one expect.

Although the Directorate of Sainik Welfare which has its offices in every state can play a big role towards providing help to the aggrieved soldiers; retired or serving but when the entire administrative machinery in the country is rotten , even they can not be of much help.

Notwithstanding the above, if concerned authorities have the will the procedures can be streamlined but as the whole system is politicised and corrupt even the most determined tend to give up.

Yes, indeed a lot is happening.

Unfortunately, we the common men, realise the inadequacies of our administration and arrogance of our Politicians only when we are faced with a crisis situation or someone close to us has to face its consequences, till then we keep praying God; HEY BHAGWAN MEREY PARIVAR KO MUSIBAT SEY BACHANA.

All this may sound to be cynical, but just try dial 100 and call for Police help for Loud music being played after 10 PM at the nearby banquet garden or during Devi Pujan and one’s doubts about the efficiency of administration will get cleared.

When this year we would be celebrating our 75 years of independence, the least the state can do is to make sure that the Police help is provided on time and it upholds SC’s judgements.

I am compelled to write this column because a lady shared her plight form her car, she was travelling in along with her family that was stuck, rather is still stuck, for almost 12 hours near Bhopal in a jam, that was caused by lakhs of people that have come to receive a magical Rudraksh necklace from a Swami.

There is already a news going round that a lady has lost her life in this messy situation.

Do not question the Faith? That’s what we are being told these days.

There is a long list of such sadhus and swamis who have been claiming of miracles but in last few years they have gained prominence. Some monks exhorted Hindus to kill Muslims and Christians and they are still not behind the bars, a month ago a Swami talked of reading the minds of people and his followers demanded action against those who opposed him, a year or so ago some washed the feet of brahmins when they entered temple and now this traffic jam of almost 20kms near Bhopal , all this is happening in the guise of Faith.

If we introspect dispassionately, we will find that thousands of those stuck on the Indore-Bhopal Highway is purely because of our deeds of last few years. We are surely being driven towards medievalism by a nexus of swamis, politicians, and many other stake holders. And if we do not mend our ways even now, things would further slip out of our hands and we shall take India to medievalism. Instead of routing out the practices of medieval era we are in the guise of culture and faith are encouraging them. We have stopped questioning them and rather humiliating those who are questioning those medival practices and irrational beliefs.

As a society we need to remember, our freedom fighters had to do toil hard to get us freedom because first they had to fight the social evils of medieval era that had got ingrained in the society. Rather , we should be careful about these medieval era practices because it were they which made us lose our political freedom.

The job of the leader is not to make a society conservative but to inculcate a scientific temperament.

About Us

Our journey as a modern nation statestarted in 1947 with the historic speech byPandit Jawaharlal Nehru, with 95% illiteracy, barely any industry and transport system, armed forces that were divided due to partition lacking equipment was largely in disarray, if there were guns- then the dial sights were taken away by Pakistanis, making the guns ineffective, if there were files- maps were taken way by Pakistanis, if there were battalions, half the men had gone away to Pakistan and so on.
